Counselling for Deaf Clients

Richard Townshend, New Zealand's first qualified deaf counsellor, provides a service for deaf clients in sign language at the Centre. This enables clients to work through their issues and concerns without having to use an interpreter.

Richard himself has been deaf since he was 5 years old and his working life has taken him from a background in joinery to a passion and enthusiam to work with people in their pursuit of growth and wholeness. Richard began his training in 1999 with the support of the Canterbury District Health Board(CDHB), the Deaf Association and Arahura. In 2005 he attained membership of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. Richard's full profile can be seen in the staff section of this site.

As Richard is part funded by the CDHB for his work at the Centre, fees for clients are kept to a minimum.
